Top 20 finish for SIMS Rally Team in Yorkshire
Posted on Tuesday, September 30th, 2014 in Rally News
The SIMS Rally Team successful season continued this weekend, when a Top 20 overall finish was one of a number of notable results for Tony Simpson and Ian Bevan. To add to this superb achievement, the duo also took a start to finish class victory in N3 with the Ford Fiesta as well as second overall in the Silver Star category of the BTRDA as well.
The teams year long aim has been to contest the British round of the World Rally Championship in November and prior to the start Simpson was in an ebullient mood and said “We are out of the reckoning for the Championship now sadly, but today is seeing about how much we can push here in Yorkshire. I feel very comfortable on these stages in the likes of Dalby and Staindale, and the Trackrod is where I won the title two years ago.”
From the off, the Rallyme.co.uk run pair headed to Langdale in the Fiesta and immediately made good Simpson’s earlier promise and set a fastest class time on 12:11.5 and straight into a top thirty place on the leader board as well. With no testing and an admittedly “cautious start” it was a good way to start an event. Next up was the demands of Gale Rigg where Simpson admitted “It was a super stage for us, we had real push in there and Ian and I were working well, y’know one of the stages where you just feel it has all clicked and we used every inch of the 130hp we had…!”
Still leading the class, they pair headed into the tricky Cropton, one of a number of famous Yorkshire stages, steeped in history but ready to catch the unwary. The conditions were dry and in places dusty but Simpson and Bevan kept the class lead to emerge in twenty-sixth place overall. Simpson added at the end of the stage “The grip was varied in there, and to be honest there were a few places I was not confident with, so it was a case of watching the braking points and being sensible.”
With a trip back to service before the final two stage of the day, some adjustments were made to the car, to alleviate the car feeling loose on some of the high speed sections. The Rallyme.co.uk team set to work to make the changes, and also remedy some cosmetic damage to the car as too, evidence of how hard Simpson was trying.
For the Flying Dog pair, it was Staindale that was up next, and at just under seven miles, it was a stiff test too, as Simpson admitted “A great stage, and one that flows so well for you as a driver, so when you look down and see you are at over 120mph, your concentration suddenly gets better all of a sudden at that speed, but that is what makes these stages so good. They test you as a driver, and I really enjoyed that one.”
With the class lead still intact and now on the fringes of the top twenty the final stage was the eight and a half miles of the infamous Dalby, and the SIMS Rally Team pair made no mistakes, though Simpson admitted to not starting the stage well, and took a well deserved class win in N3, Top Twenty finish overall and Second in the Silver Star standings as well. At the finish Simpson said “I started Dalby a bit sloppy, but got it all together and it once again flowed ever so well for Ian and I. As a team we are delighted with how we have done here in Yorkshire, it’s a happy hunting ground for me and yes, today it a good day.”
The SIMS Rally Team now look ahead to Wales Rally GB, and some unfinished business from last year, and while no more events are planned for the team Simpson admitted that it will still be a busy interim for the team. He added, “We have some corporate days organised to thank some of sponsors coming up, but we hope to announce one or two new ones for Wales Rally GB as well, plus there are a few test days planned for the team as well, so all in all it will be a busy few weeks, and to be honest without the likes of Flying Dog, DOT, Seacon Rydal Gym, Rallyme.co.uk and Steve Harkness who have all helped us massively we could not celebrate today or be here without them.”
The team’s next Official outing is the World Rally Championship round here in Britain, Wales Rally GB that runs from 13th -16th November
